The ensemble formed in 2009 as postgraduate students at the RNCM. The trio have a diverse repertoire including original works for woodwind trio, as well as their own arrangements of popular classics, jazz, and show-tunes, and new music written especially for their ensemble. VISTA have a busy concert diary and perform regularly around the UK. Recent highlights have included performances at Buxton Festival, Harrogate International Festival, the Uppermill Summer Music Festival and the RLPO lunchtime concert series.
VISTA are passionate about bringing exciting new music to a wider audience. They are particularly interested in exploring repertoire for their more unusual combination of doubling instruments (alto flute, cor anglais, and bass clarinet) and have several works for this combination in their repertoire. The trio have also successfully commissioned new works for their ensemble by composers Jacob Thompson-Bell, Michael Betteridge, and James Stephenson. As well as recital performances of new works, VISTA also take the works into outreach settings.
The trio have a strong commitment to outreach work and are members of Yehudi Menuhin’s Live Music Now! scheme for young musicians and Music in Hospitals. Their work for LMN takes them into a wide variety of different community settings, bringing live music to care homes, special schools, day centres, hospices, and hospital wards. The trio are also experienced in running workshops in primary and secondary schools – from introducing the different instruments, to working with GCSE composition students.
